Description - The Brief
Roxy asked me to create a bespoke silk pocket square as a birthday gift for her fiancée.
There were certain elements that she wanted to be incorporated into the design including:
- The Eiffel Tower where he had proposed to her
- The infinity symbol
- The well-known brand colour for Tiffany jewellery
- Their initials ‘R’ and ‘S’
- The following quote from the film Moulin Rouge “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”
- A deep burgundy colour as the border.
The Process
I started the design process by hand drawing the Eiffel Tower and painting the infinity symbol.
The following three options were discussed with Roxy
- The infinity symbol is the dominant design motif repeated in the corners and as circles
- The Eiffel Tower as the main motif with a vintage feel by using their initials, the infinity symbol and vintage hot air balloons, to create a quite conversational and narrative design
- Using the Eiffel Tower to create a more masculine geometric, all-over surface and using their initials and the infinity symbol pattern design in the centre of the design.
After much deliberation, Roxy chose the third of these options.
The Outcome
I was able to fit the quote running along the burgundy border and the Tiffany colour was used for their initials.
This was a really enjoyable piece to create as Roxy was very clear about what she wanted to be incorporated but was willing to discuss the different options.
The square was finished with a hand-rolled edge and suffice it to say, Roxy and her fiancée were delighted with his thoughtful and unique birthday gift.
